This diva and her perfectly voluminous bob against the world. Favorite Nicole Kidman performance by a mile? She bodied that. Trying not to say this on every review after I watch something in blu-ray (lol) but damn, the colors, sharpness & grain on the 4K transfer of this was exceptional. I <3 the 90s.

Absolutely hit me right in the chest. Relatable and harrowing, maybe the most honestly tender depiction of how trauma affects the adolescent psyche I’ve ever witnessed on screen. Soooo many detailed layers to Neil and Brian’s characterization that have been on my mind since watching. First Gregg Araki but undoubtedly watching his whole filmography soon after this.
I adore this film. One of the most slick, original, and innovative independent films of all time. Was able to catch a rep screening of this at The Charles and forgot how laugh out loud funny some scenes are. Tamara and Cheryl causally giving us buddy comedy excellence while simultaneously busting open the seams of what Black lesbian “representation” could be. Essential!
Stunning, one of the best films I’ve watched in a long minute. Sad I hadn’t heard of this earlier, especially with the string of J-horror American remakes that followed in the early 2000’s. Was engrossed with everything about this by the midway point, had to rewatch just a few days after. Kurosawa is clearly a master of drawing out the eerie existential undertones found in our everyday.
