If only all IP Hollywood dreck was this good. Strong sense of direction, visuals, and tension, with a rich exploration on the themes of female body autonomy and the patriarchy of the Catholic Church. It’s all headlined by a star making turn by Nell Tiger Free who honestly gives a powerhouse performance (I’d even say awards worthy). There’s definitely some friction with the whole “50 year old franchise of it all” but this slaps 80% of the time.

Emilia Pérez 2024
Sort of a regressive train wreck that despite myself, I had some fun with. There’s simply too much camp in the vaginoplasty song alone for me to truly hate this. Belle 2021
Brilliant isolated moments and ideas surrounded by a movie that doesn't know what to do with them. There's a raw sense of spectacle and emotion to several scenes in this, specifically the music scenes and a jaw-droppingly beautiful climax, but the movie doesn't sell these scenes within the context of its own narrative. All of the emotions here lack nuance, the character beats are rushed, and there's like 20 side stories that have no business being in this movie. The…

Princess Mononoke 1997
This is what fantasy epics should look like. Complicated politics and themes, strong characterizations, and an undeniable sense of scope and wonder. There's beauty all over this film, but also violence and hatred. How do humans coexist with a world we destroy? Is greed good when it allows us to better the lives of those we care about? What do we owe to the nature around us? The film addresses all of these questions, and it shows how there are…
