Letterboxd Year in Review Title Image

Presented by

2024 in Review

We’re here to become human again. To become all we imagine and more than we were programmed to be. To live life forwards, even while we look back.

We see possible futures, all at once, in the ghost light. So we draw closer to the TV’s glow, going with the flow of family life, of grandmas and daughters, hit men and fall guys, learning to defy gravity, Anxiety… and brutalist beavers.

Let the white smoke rise—we have our winners. Or, in the words of Tashi Duncan: COME ON!

Please enjoy our thirteenth annual retrospective. (Your personalized summary is here!)

Highest Rated

Based on almost half a billion ratings cast by our members in 2024, these are the highest-rated films overall, by genre, and in other categories.

Cut to: our highest-rated film! 🎬

Results as of 1 January 2025.

Dune: Part Two

1 Dune: Part Two

“An absolute behemoth of a film. My goodness. The entire third act is some of the most goosebump-inducing filmmaking I’ve ever seen. I can’t stress enough the intensity of the emotions I feel while watching this. It’s truly an experience I’ll cherish forever.” George Carmi George Carmi

Average weighted rating: 4.4

I'm Still Here

2 I'm Still Here

“May we never forget the dark past we lived through, may we never forget the many voices cruelly silenced by hands that, even today, remain unpunished. And finally, may we remember: even the faintest smile can be the thread of hope that guides us through the labyrinths of despair.” gabe lisbôa gabe lisbôa

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies

3 How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies

“For anyone who’s ever lost someone they didn’t get to love fully, this film doesn’t just break you, it reveals that the truest wounds lie not in the act of losing but in the moments that slipped away unnoticed … Most importantly, I’d say give your grandparents a good hug after watching. :)” neil neil

Genre Winners

As The Substance director Coralie Fargeat says, genre allows us to go outside of reality and be in a world where the rules are different.

Cinema’s strange darlings in 2024 included fur trappers, Irish rappers and Wasteland whippersnappers. In an Olympic year of sweaty body-building and acrobatic action, we also refereed a special sports top ten.

Apresentando: your genre winners. 🎾

  1. Dune: Part Two
  2. Hundreds of Beavers
  3. Manjummel Boys
  4. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
  5. Aavesham
  6. Riddle of Fire
  7. Maharaja
  8. Thelma
  9. Monkey Man
  10. Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In

Dune: Part Two

“The worm-riding scene was the best moment of the entire movie. I felt so alive with all the special effects and the sound design and the vibrations—it’s like I was riding it myself.”  Acoucalancha Acoucalancha

Average weighted rating: 4.4

  1. Hundreds of Beavers
  2. Rap World
  3. Anora

  7. Ghostlight
  8. Problemista
  9. A Real Pain
  10. A Different Man

Hundreds of Beavers

“One of the funniest movies I’ve seen and plays so well with a crowd. Great live-action Looney Tunes movie. Few things are funnier to me than when a human is put on trial by literal animals that he has wronged.”  Srirachachau Srirachachau

Average weighted rating: 4.1

  1. I'm Still Here

I'm Still Here

“The way it immerses you in the family, the closeness, the lightness between them, the happiness they carry... it’s incredible. When the climax comes, the anguish is overwhelming.”  rafael rafael

Nosferatu

“Lily-Rose Depp, I’m so sorry I ever doubted you! Nosferatu is the scariest film I’ve seen this year and quite possibly my favorite Robert Eggers to date. He manages to breathe new life into the classic vampire tale while still doing right by F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film.”  Lexi Amoriello Lexi Amoriello

Women Directors

Among those who helmed our 50 highest-rated narrative films, eight women were in the director’s chair. Indian women filmmakers especially lit up our screens and imaginations in 2024.

Eight is a drop from last year’s fourteen, which included Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar Barbie. We don’t like to see women and gender-expansive storytellers put back in the box, so here’s where we can pull the focus on some underrepresented artists.

And now for our women of the hour… 💪🏽

  1. Lost Ladies
  2. Ghostlight
  3. Tatami
  4. All We Imagine as Light
  5. Love in the Big City
  6. Memories of a Burning Body
  7. The Substance
  8. Loveable
  9. The People's Joker
  10. Out of My Mind

Lost Ladies

“Lost ladies? Nah, ladies who found their way. One wanted to just get married and stay put and the other wanted to taste her freedom and nothing was wrong about either of their dreams. Two beautiful representations. 🌸”  Alicecharles Alicecharles

Average weighted rating: 4.0

  1. All We Imagine as Light

  8. Parachute

All We Imagine as Light

“To surrender to All We Imagine as Light is to immerse oneself in Payal Kapadia’s vision of Mumbai … The colours, the performances, and the score all graciously blend together to tell a relaxing and poignant story of working-class women.”  roro roro

No Other Land

“Directors Rachel Szor and Hamdan Ballal capture the conflict on the ground in harrowing vérité style … It’s a fearless work, a howl of rage in the face of injustice, but what makes it so memorable is its ability to find calm in the storm.”  Mattie Lucas Mattie Lucas
