Last Shift

Last Shift

Damnson... this feels more Manson than Manson.

It was late 2014 - early 2015 when I completely transitioned from MP4 to MKV format when it came to downloading movies, and I downloaded a lot of movies, like a lot πŸ˜…. But it was also the time I started exploring indie, underrated, unrated movies with a passion and came across some amazing titles like Deborah Logan, Let Us Prey, Michael King, Atticus Institute, The Banshee Chapter, The Boy (2015), Come Back to Me, and many more. And it all started with Last Shift (and what attracted me to it was the poster, I have a thing for possessed women crawling like that, which is why I kind of like Devil Seed (2012) too πŸ˜‚).

So, the plot opens with Jessica Loren, who’s tasked with taking the last shift at a police station before it’s permanently closed, a shift that quickly turns into a nightmare. You know the phrase "baptism by fire"? This is more like baptism by hellfire, in every sense of the word. I can’t even begin to tell you how beautifully paced and crafted the entire plot is. Generally, in settings like this, the movie is just filled with scares from start to finish, and hardly any emphasis is given to the story, especially when it comes to exploring it's different branches. This one’s packed with a ton of scares too, but they’re placed throughout the narrative in such a way that an actual story is told, not just from one, but multiple perspectives. Because of these layers, it eliminates another problem, which is predictability. And sure, you can predict a few things here, but my issue in movies isn’t that things become predictable, it’s the laziness in approaching that moment with no creativity or effort that pisses me off. But this one is just so good in its approach.

Seeing a movie like this sitting at an average of 2.8 on LB and 5.8 on IMDb is just sad. This deserves at least a 0.3 lift. And i know for a fact if this movie had come out after 2020, it would be a lot more popular and praised. Overall, I’d say Anthony DiBlasi is a great director. Even his past works like Casadaga and Dread were above average and rewatchable. He definitely deserves a shot with bigger studios. The man has vision and can actually think for a change, unlike some hacks who just keep serving up freezer-burned crap. And no, I'm not looking at Michael Chaves you are....
