Begotten is an interesting curio - a silent film creation story with some disturbing imagery. It's extremely experimental, like an ambitious student film, but it's not so much horror as it is just an unpleasant watch. I could see it being played in the background of a Halloween party (for grownups) or a Death Metal concert; but it's not great for putting on at home and giving it your full attention. My main problem with it is the excruciatingly slow pace - it was only bearable for me at 3x speed.
I'll give credit for the silent film aesthetic (it really does look like it was filmed in the 1920s) and for the physical performances of the mother and son (you can tell they must have had a dance/theatre background). But overall it's an interesting experiment that doesn't justify its runtime.
