In the 20 years since this movie came out, Pirates of the Caribbean has become a huge franchise. It has 5 installments, 2 of which made over a billion dollars at the box office, and all of that success goes back to everyone who helped make this film putting in way more effort than they needed to for an adaptation of a theme park ride. It feels like the type of classic adventure that we don’t get a lot of nowadays, it does an excellent job of just sucking the audience into this world and telling a captivating story about pirates. The standout here is of course Johnny Depp who disappears into the role of Captain Jack Sparrow. He can pull off being the scoundrel but also remain likable because of how well he plays the comedic moments, in fact he played the character so well that he even got an oscar nomination for best actor because of it. In fact everyone here does a great job, both in front of and behind the camera. It has a great score that fits the swashbuckling tone really nicely, and the romance and action elements are done really well. In an era where most new movies put out by big studios are just trying to have impressive spectacle and appeal to broad audiences, it’s so refreshing to go back and watch a movie that’s only 20 years old yet still tells an incredibly timeless story. Give it another 20 years and I think this one will be seen as an all time classic.
