John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

Since the first film, the John Wick franchise has made a name for itself for many reasons, one of which being the insane, memorable, and incredibly choreographed action, and this movie takes that element and makes it even more insane, even more memorable, and makes the action choreography even better. The combat in this film is truly astounding, they got so creative with the different ways John Wick takes out his opponents and it’s is really exciting to watch. It’s so well done that there are points where you truly can’t tell whether the action you’re watching was made using practical effects and stunt work, or was made through digital effects. In doing this, it does strain way too much credibility. John Wick should have died at several points in this film, but not only does he survive everything that gets thrown at him, but he continues to get up and keep fighting despite the horrible and deadly injuries he’s endured. We get more exploration of this world of assassins set up in the previous couple films which I found really compelling, and it never felt like too much exposition. Whenever it gets into world building, it gives you just enough to know what’s going on, but it always gets back to the action quickly enough that you never get bored, it goes much bigger than the previous films but it also might have the best pacing in the series. At the same time there’s not much of a story to this film, it’s just a bunch of assassins coming after John Wick for two hours, and even when you do get some plot development it isn’t too impactful, the character is in about the same place at the end of the film as he was at the beginning, it functions better when looked at as a piece of this franchise as opposed to just a film in and of itself, but it’s still wildly entertaining and overall I would absolutely say this franchise has remained consistently great throughout these first three films, and I’m very excited to see the continuation in the fourth installment.
