When I first watched this about a year ago, I thought it was teetering on great. Admittedly, I do remember being a little jarred. For someone like me who knew nothing about this film, it sets itself up for some expectations that were not really fulfilled, although I think I grasped the films atmospheric intention.
Coincidentally, shortly after that, I watched Nicholas Roeg’s Walkabout for the first time. Not only does that film make a terrific companion piece to this,…

Nazareno Cruz and the Wolf 1975
If I have gained anything from deep diving over 70 horror films from 1975 it is mining this phenomenal little gem. As its peculiar title may suggest, it is not a conventional werewolf film at all. It is a Shakespearean tragedy reimagined into the classic parable of the devil offering a deal of wealth in exchange for his toll, wrapped in an Argentinian folk tale. The script is actually pretty minimalist but it is incredibly maximized. There is so much…

The Heart of Justice 1992
This feels like an episode of Murder, She Wrote starring Eric Stoltz. This has a kind of ridiculous cast for a TV movie but everyone is absolutely phoning it in. Cool set up, maybe even edgy for TV but once we get into the sinister angle, it is absolute incoherent half baked nonsense. The 87 minute run time felt like 2 hours and your kind of ultimately left saying “well okay then.” Still miss these 90s tv movies though, the memberberries are strong.

Companion 2025
This is well produced and acted with a solid tense script that works well as a straightforward horror thriller but I do feel as if some of the subtext gets in the way of a good thing. It’s so heavy handed with some cringe dialogue that it just feels like it beats you over the head to the point where it was a little eye rolling to me. Could’ve definitely used another draft.
I’m glad the “twist” in this…

Longlegs 2024
It legitimately pains me to write this but this movie is a goofy illogical mess. Can we please get these guys who have a legitimately talented eye behind the camera a god damn writing partner. This film begins as what feels like a retelling of Manhunter but through the eyes of Silence of the Lambs. The character of Lee Hark mirrors the youthful promising FBI agent but with that sense of naivety much like Clarice Starling. But already equipped with a…

MaXXXine 2024
Ti West manages to create quite the cocktail here with this neo-noir laced in a love letter to the tastiest, sultriest brand of horror we’ve ever been bestowed: The Giallo. But not without a veneer of dirty, rotten LA caked on it. The script flies as if Quentin Tarantino threw down some dialogue for horror fans, there are endless references and the more you’re into movies or either genre the more fun you’ll have with that, even going as far…
