The Brutalist

The Brutalist

I think I'm having a slight problem reconciling how the elements of wonderfully ghostly ambiguity (namely, the ending) square up with an assortment of on-the-nose themes that are kind of left unceremoniously wafting through the air of the credits because of the enigma of the last 15 minutes or so (The Engmia Of Departure, more like it!). True, too, that the propulsive quality of the first chapter is lost as the film moves into a more reflective state and jumbles the pacing a bit. Regardless, this is a great movie and one that I liked more on this rewatch, imposing in its grandeur and effective as a beautiful and tragic American epic/immigrant story. It finds that sublime synthesis you get when watching a great director fastidiously pull together the disparate artistic elements of cinema into something so classically potent, a sort of success that speaks for itself as you make your way through a 200-minute runtime. As László says, "Is there a better description of a cube than that of its construction?"
