Tyler The frog’s review published on Letterboxd:
Ani is a prostitute who is making a low income salary, trying to get her shit together. Beneath the surface thought, she’s searching for love. While others call her a “whore” or an “evil woman” she’s confident in her own shoes and knows how to stick her ground.
Sean Baker’s new film which I’ve been waiting for like people wait for GTA 6, is nothing short of a masterpiece, living up to every expectation and surpassing them with a mind blowing artillery of nonstop chaos.
Similar to Uncut Gems if it were a Cinderella story, and being one of the first linear stories Baker has directed, he continuously impresses us with his filmmaking range and style, which seems to never stop evolving.
Mikey Madison in the absolute performance of the year has done nothing short of dedicating her entire self to this role. It’s clear she understands every aspect of Ani, and is absolutely a well deserved runner up come awards season.
So is this film in terms of best picture, which would be a landmark in film history for something like this to be given the Academy’s biggest honor.
My dad described it best with this sentence: “it’s like a classic Cinderella story but instead of everything going right, the exact opposite happens.”
This review wasn’t as long but I’m absolutely going to revisit this in the theater as it was a magical experience that I need to absorb as well as I possibly can.
Love you guys!
