Abbas Kiarostami´s “The Traveler” is an interesting Iranian take on neorealism that follows a resourceful yet amoral small-town boy on his quest to attend a football match in Tehran at any cost. It´s a simple story that has a lot to say about childhood, Iranian society, passion, morality, and living in an uncaring world. I love how the film makes me care for our young protagonist, although he is a little shit the majority of the time. The ending hits hard, as it symbolizes the boy´s first experience with the kind of disappointment that characterizes adulthood. Early Kiarostami is not yet fully polished but already quite powerful.
