“The Ritual” does a lot of things right. It has a strong first act, an interesting group of characters who have an entertaining dynamic, a tragic backstory and engaging character arc for final boy, decent acting, great cinematography, amazing creature design, several horrifying moments, and an atmospheric forest setting that is used to great effect. Unfortunately, some stupid parts of the script, several very familiar and unoriginal story beats, and an overall underwhelming last act prevent “The Ritual” from being a truly great horror film. Still, I would recommend it for a Netflix horror film evening with friends.
