When I see Philip Marlowe in “The Long Goodbye”, I see Spike Spiegel from “Cowboy Bebop”. The laidback coolness, the swagger, the smart mouth, and the aura of world-weary aloofness that hides that despite everything, deep down he still cares. Exactly the right protagonist you enjoy following as he untangles a web of lies, greed, betrayals, and false loyalties. Robert Altman´s “The Long Goodbye” is a neo noir classic that is equal parts an engaging mystery and a moody hangout film. The plot is intriguing and well-constructed but the film´s real strength is the smoothness of it all, from Gould´s performance over Altman´s direction to John Williams´ score. It´s the comforting kind of hard-boiled fiction with a strong layer of human absurdity. Films like “The Big Lebowski”, “Inherent Vice”, and “Under the Silver Lake” are all children of “The Long Goodbye”.
