In my first review I wrote: “I respect his (Lanthimos) weirdness more than I love it.” Well, three years later I can say I love it now. “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” nails the trademark Lanthimos tone and finds a perfect balance between drama, absurd dark humor, and off-kilter surrealism. The film is a Greek tragedy brought to the 21st century and filtered through Yorgos Lanthimos´ strange, idiosyncratic mind. It´s like the uncanny valley in movie form, nothing feels quite right…yet that´s exactly how it´s supposed to be. The enigmatic plot, unnatural acting, cold, unsettling atmosphere, rich subtext, and clinical control of the camerawork, mise-en-scène, and performances make “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” an immersive, intriguing, uncomfortable, and perplexing watch. And the cast clearly understood the assignment. Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan fully vibe with the director´s weirdness and Nicole Kidman and Raffey Cassidy contribute great support. I think so far, this is my favorite Lanthimos film but I´m beyond excited for “Poor Things”. This Greek weirdo is one of the most fascinating auteurs working right now.
