“The Black Cauldron” is a largely forgotten Disney animated film, and I guess I can see why. The characters are underdeveloped, the plot is very thin, and overall, the movie just isn´t very memorable. Still, I´ve always been a big fan of fantasy, and especially high fantasy, and this film features all the familiar tropes: The unlikely hero, the world-ending threat, the prophesy, the quest, kings and princesses, magical swords and other items, castles, dragons, fairies, witches, a bard, and a good old battle between good and evil. If this is too cliché for you, you should avoid this movie, but what can I say, I just like this kind of stories. They make me feel warm, happy, and a bit nostalgic. I mean, it´s no “The Lord of the Rings”, but for me it´s enough for a good time. And I also appreciate that Disney attempted a darker tone than in most of their films.
