Shoot 'Em Up

Shoot 'Em Up

Two minutes into this film, Clive Owen kills a bad guy with a carrot. At that point, you know if you´re on board with the film or not. “Shoot ’Em Up” is basically a live action cartoon that goes as over the top as it gets yet tonally plays it straight and acts like every reality-defying stunt or action set piece is just another Tuesday. Hey, deadpan reactions to the most insane and absurd situations is my shit, which is why I was greatly entertained. The film is the baby sequence from “Hard Boiled” on crack and stars Clive Owen giving his best Chow Yun-fat impression, Monica Bellucci looking as gorgeous as always, and Paul Giamatti as an unlikely yet very entertaining antagonist. Yet the true protagonist of the movie are guns. The plot revolves around guns, the action consists mainly of gun-fu with a strong emphasis on the gun part, and it feels like 90% of the screenwriting process was devoted to come up with fun and creative things you can do with guns. The aptly titled “Shoot ’Em Up” is a bonkers, high-adrenaline action fest that fully commits to its silliness. I had a fun time with it.

I watched “Sin City” and “Shoot ’Em Up” back-to-back. In the former film, Clive Owen makes out with Rosario Dawson and in the latter with Monica Bellucci….sometimes, being an actor isn’t so bad, huh?
