Ok, you guys didn´t lie, “Eyes of Laura Mars” really is an American giallo. We have a mysterious serial killer with a bizarre motive, lots of sketchy potential suspects/red herrings, violent kills, psychosexual themes, a non-detective protagonist who also has a psychic ability which isn´t explained further, lots of close-ups of eyes, a banging score, exaggerated performances, and a twist ending. All that´s missing is the dubbing for a completely authentic giallo experience. Let´s be clear, “Eyes of Laura Mars” lacks the stylish visual flair of Dario Argento´s or Mario Bava´s best works and its ending doesn´t live up to its potential, but the intriguing premise, well-realized New York fashion milieu setting, strong acting quartet consisting of Faye Dunaway, Tommy Lee Jones, Brad Dourif, and Rene Auberjonois, and the at least solid execution of the popular genre tropes makes it worth a watch for giallo fans.
