“Before I Wake” is a fine film but it´s also a bit bland. It´s clear that Mike Flanagan had not fully developed his formular at this point, although he already was on the right track. The psychological drama aspect dealing with loss, grief, family, and trauma is emotionally moving but the horror aspect is underwhelming compared to other Flanagan projects. You just need to watch a single “A Nightmare on Elm Street” movie to know that you can do more interesting and creative things with dreams than butterflies and generic monsters. Nonetheless, I liked the creepy, melancholic mood of the film.
