American Fiction

American Fiction

“American Fiction” is part zany cultural satire and part touching family drama. The way I see it, those two elements exist next to each other rather than forming a coherent satisfying whole. It feels like you get two movies in one, but in an uneven way. That being said, judged on their own, both the satire and the drama hit the right beats. Some moments are really funny, other moments are really moving, and the acting is terrific all around. Jeffrey Wright is a treasure.

We could have had an Oscar nominee called “Fuck” if Cord Jefferson (or the producers) had fully committed to the bit.
