Alucarda

Alucarda

“Alucarda” feels like Alejandro Jodorowsky and Ken Russell made a movie after reading Stephen King´s “Carrie”. It´s a sleazy, surreal, and totally audacious nunsploitation flick with elements of supernatural horror, specifically demonic possessions, that explores themes such as tradition vs modernity, (sexual) freedom vs. repression, religion vs. science, and fanatism vs. reason. It´s clearly a low-budget movie, yet it has a stylish flair and brims with passionate filmmaking. The film´s entire vibe is loud, chaotic, and feverish, and the climax is as insane as it gets. “Alucarda” is raw, rough around the edges, and more than just a bit weird, and it suffers from underwritten characters, but it also is refreshingly bold, imaginative, exhilarating, and subversive. Fans of religious horror and exploitation films should check it out.
