Vertigo

Vertigo

I have finally arrived at the first Hitchcock I didn't connect with.

Vertigo, despite its beautiful look and commitment to story, is the only film of the iconic director's that I found to be just...decent. I admit that having seen countless more tightly-paced and frankly more interesting mystery films has perhaps influenced my opinion of this as a more than slightly predictable slow burn. That said, it's a film that, riveting final minutes notwithstanding, I occasionally found myself underwhelmed by. Still, I found lots to appreciate about it, enough so that I kept trying to find reasons to root for it despite my continually waxing and waning interest in its plot. It's undoubtedly a Hitchcock and one that has influenced countless other features, two things which immediately make it a cut above most but, for now, it's the master of suspense joint that ranks last in my own estimation.

P.S. The way James Stewart kisses women really gets under my skin. He rubs his face all over theirs so much. So much. Whatever tanner they put on him is impressively robust. Yugh.
