Top Gun: Maverick
“I intend to push your limits. Show me what you’re made of”
Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick is miles better than the first one. Honestly there isn’t that much substance in the first one yet this somehow maximizes on the emotions. Cruise is in terrific form. A true movie star. He sells the emotional beats even when the writing doesn’t. The final act is some of the most impressive stuff you’ll ever see. A true technical achievement. It’s a summer blockbuster that takes its audience seriously and delivers in terms of emotion, scale and action. The first two acts could have been paced a bit better. There’s also this lingering meta feel to it as if it wants to look at where Tom Cruise is at in his career. Make sure to watch the first one right before.
