    ★★★½

Visually grotesque from the get go, playing every scene to maximise discomfort with brilliant pacing.

I understand much of the (valid) criticism this film has received but for me, it was a campy and highly enjoyable body horror in slicker, arthouse packaging that wasn't really intended to offer any deeper notes on aging or the commodification of women's bodies beyond whatever most already know. Sort of like Malignant meets the Shining but at the A24 parking lot.

    Some narrative details…

    Nocturnal Animals

    ★★½

somehow the storytelling devices here are gripping enough to sustain my attention, combined by some stellar performances (especially Jake Gyllenhaal) but they cannot distract me from how pretentious this film looks - inconsistent cinematography, gratuitously violent and meaningless imagery, and worst of all the dangerous allegories the narrative is trying to make about women's bodies and agency. Talk about an overreaction.

I think a film like this deserved a little more atmosphere, but some stunning acting by the entire cast. Deepthi Naval deserves all the flowers.
