The Killing of a Sacred Deer

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is well-shot, adeptly acted, intensely written, and beautifully unsettling. It left me with the feeling of never wanting to watch it again. Yet I still want to rewatch it at some point. From the opening shot, the film left me feeling uncomfortable from the get-go. It set it' tone and let the viewer know we were in for a disturbing ride. From the haunting score that seems to creep its way into every scene, to the awkward and robotic characters, to the downright scary Martin (who is excellently played by Barry Keoghan), the film just feels 'off'. If the characters' inhumane mannerisms, conversations, and actions aren't unsettling enough, the film also delivers enough on-screen gross-outs to implement a truly affecting experience. Yorgos Lanthimos has truly made a film that challenges viewers and helps envoke their imagination.

This film is about choices, sacrifices, morals, and revenge. In addition to that, this is another deeply disturbing yet fantastic film coming from Lanthimos. It provides a harsh critic of the modern way of living in western societies. Alienation, fake goals, fabricated relations, and money that bring comfort but not happiness. The film is filled with an overarching, all-consuming darkness that lingers even after it's over. Still, it's a truly unique and deeply affecting film that's worth watching, even if only once. Yorgos Lanthimos produces a harsh commendation on American hypocrisy - and it was brilliant.

P.S. I would lowkey recommend watching on an airplane - it enhances the experience and adds a trapped sensation. Didn't have a good time but I soaked it all in.
