Zendaya: How much of my screentime is slow-motion?
Denis: yes
I had the opportunity to catch an early screening of this on IMAX last night and I left completely blown away. Hell, I'm still blown away. This was everything I hyped myself up for and more. The score is the most Hans Zimmer that Hans Zimmer has ever Hans Zimmered. I could write paragraphs about the score easily but I will refrain from doing so... until my next viewing at least. The music felt like The Prince of Egypt meets The Mandalorian. The aggressiveness of the vocals, the rolling crescendo of the percussion make for a unique and exotic yet brooding and haunting sound. The combination of the ethereal and otherworldly music and godlike visuals was absolutely epic.
Dune is so brilliantly paced, dwelling on the characters during conflicts and rushing forward with the action. The film also takes its time to build and present its universe, but Villeneuve makes the most out of his canvas, using a magnificent score, immersive sound, and sharp design to tell the story and build the atmosphere with breathtaking cinematography. The performances are consistently excellent with Timothée Chalamet holding his own in his first blockbuster leading role. It truly was an immersive cinematic experience and it's definitely the best theater experience I've had in 2021. I encourage everyone to watch this in the biggest theater you can find!
