Smiledriver’s review published on Letterboxd:
Not so much a Deadpool sequel but instead more of an introduction to a new, slightly more sanitized, MCU-approved variant.
Like many of the Letterboxed horde, I ended up going down a rabbit hole of X-Men/Deadpool rewatches in preparation for this - which turned out to be a solid idea as Deadpool and Wolverine is packed to the tits with cameos stretching across the last 25 years of comic book movies. While I did enjoy my revisit to these ancient shores, it did leave me a little unsure of what I wanted this movie to achieve, especially as it could potentially destroy Wolverine's superb swan song in Logan (2017).
For the most part, I came out of this movie pretty satisfied with what I witnessed. They address the elephant in the room (Logan) straightaway which set my soul at ease but then proceeded to confuse the shit out of me for 60 mins before the movie actually finds it's flow.
Violence was fun (not a patch on what David Leitch acheived in Deadpool 2) and Jackman delivers a great performance with some surprisingly emotional scenes but it's the fanservice that really carries this one all the way to the finish line and maybe I'm getting old but I was marking out for quite a few scenes.
Few issues for me, mainly the complete bastardization of Vanessa but all in all, I think a shot of Deadpool into the veins is just what the MCU needed.
