Nosferatu

Nosferatu

Since it was initially announced that Robert Eggers would be taking on the daunting task of reimagining NOSFERATU, following in the footsteps of visual masterminds Murnau and Herzog, I was sold. Not only because I revered Eggers in the first place, but also because I thought he would be an excellent "next up" if another contemporary adaptation were to be carried out. I was right to have confidence that this would be great - it’s fantastic, and I’m so fucking happy. begins with pure, unflinching fear - as dark as can be - and remains that way throughout. Unadulterated gothic terror and a deeply chilling atmosphere that stays with you. Lily Rose-Depp conveys the most scorching sense of fear when confronted with predation, a tale of the haunting of purity wonderfully coupled with a classic vision of returning the concept and mythos of the vampire to its macabre beginnings. a statement piece, perfectly addressing the staple vampire lore while pushing the melodramatic tones of previous works. Forbiddingly produced and saturated with traditional horror iconography.

Much will be said about the shared characteristics between this and Bram Stoker's Dracula in terms of its repellent nature and graded alluring themes, with a few visual homages as well. Grotesque in ways I didn’t even expect. can actually see many people not entirely fucking with this because of the ways it draws from other works (which I get), but it's a balancing act that I believe Eggers did exceedingly well. Much breath poured in, both from his own vision and clearly inspired by the works of others, as was unavoidable. A film made for me, for sure. Fucking loved this shit. And if you’re an Eggers-head, you probably will too.
