Civil War

Civil War

What begins as a promising sensory overload on the verge of anything to say quickly devolves into a shallow political push and pull—presenting nothing but conciliatory notes (which I don't think is always a bad thing, but if you're going to make a film like this—take a swing!) Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny are outstanding as opposite characters—one on the verge of psychological collapse due to the impact of war-torn journalism (which I think is shown efficiently), and one at the start of the long, tumultuous journey. I feel really conflicted; one moment I was captured, and the next I was baffled by the choices that were made from scene to scene. Full of sound and big moments—some of which are good! However, the majority felt hollow and out of place. It's a difficult film to assess and one that I need to think about more.
