The most fun I’ve had with Die Hard since I first saw it. A perfectly fine tuned script, where every little detail pays off, from McClane’s bare feet to unclasping Holly’s watch (”It’s a Rolex!”) from Gruber’s grip as he falls beautifully in slo-mo to his demise. Even the lady nudes on the electrical box that McClane clocks is used as a sign post to show you he’s got back around after he’s pinned down by Karl. It’s all so smartly done. It looks absolutely phenomenal in 4K. And I laughed so much at all the great lines peppered throughout.
“I guess we’re gonna need some more FBI guys.”
Or-
Police: Attention, whoever you are, this channel is reserved for emergency calls only.
McClane: No fucking shit, lady! Does it sound like I'm ordering a pizza?
This is the first time I’ve fully appreciated the incredible score, integrating Christmas classics seamlessly into tension and action throughout. Like, it might be one of the best scores ever?
Finally, of course, shout out Alan Rickman. Once again the script gives him enough detail to make him a fascinating character, and combined with his godly performance, elevates what could be a nothing villain to one of the best ever.
Holly: After all your posturing, all your little speeches, you're nothing but a common thief.
Hans Gruber: I am an exceptional thief, Mrs. McClane. And since I'm moving up to kidnapping, you should be more polite.
