Anora

great, great film about how the party never stops for some and the rest of us have to be content with saying it was fun while it lasted. two of the most lovable performances I've seen in ages (mikey madison even better than you've probably heard, yura borisov is nothing short of magical). despite all the laughs (of which there are many!), this is a surprisingly aching work about wanting more and the world telling you to take what little you can and shut up about it. most of the characters here are consumed by the sacrifices they are forced to make for other people; sex for cash, missed baptisms, broken noses, being something you're not. all they can do in the midst of it all is reach out to each other and see if the resulting touch is enough to get that something extra they need.
