Robert Motherwell’s review published on Letterboxd:
Bizarre, beautiful, bravura film by Yorgos Lanthimos starring Emma Stone.
A sort of Frankensteinish story, Bella Baxter has been created by Willem Dafoe and is discovering the world around here,
The production design was a colorful, heightened version of reality. Which made the characters journey all the more interesting, in that she is trying to examine the truth of existence which seems to be not quite real.
The sex scenes were graphic and fun, the philosophical discourse was surprisingly humorous, and the story's denouement brought it to a whole new level.
The fish eye lenses, the carefully controlled tracking shots, and quick cuts between scenes made the picture gorgeous to watch.
An unusual story with an unusual approach, I was interested to see the script was adapted from a book. I had wondered halfway through if this was really an original screenplay.
Certainly not for all tastes, but I really enjoyed this film and thought it was exceptionally well made.
Emma Stone indeed seems to be at the peak of her powers as an actress with this film. She was certainly willing to strip bare for the audience.
Mark Ruffalo was truly good as the nice looking moron who's talented in bed.
Willem Dafoe is the perfect "creator" of this creature.
The ending was both happy and hilarious.
