Ronan’s review published on Letterboxd:
“Woo! I’m about to make a name for myself here!”
The best use of “Iris” and “Like a Prayer” ever?
I have been waiting for Deadpool and Wolverine since the moment they announced Hugh Jackman’s return, but it unfortunately could've and should’ve been better.
Deadpool and Wolverine runs a bit too long and gets too repetitive towards the end, losing itself in its own insanity while also falling into the typical tropes and lack of quality of the current MCU. Dare I say I wanted more? Ryan Reynolds has all that money and this is it? Alright…
All I truly wanted from Deadpool and Wolverine was for Dafne Keen to reprise her role as Laura and the final trailer confirmed that, so I at least went in happy and I watched it in IMAX/3D so that was a fucking sick experience.
This review will undoubtedly contain spoilers so I’ll clearly indicate where they begin, as fans will want to see this for themselves…
I will say that Deadpool and Wolverine is possibly the best of the Deadpool films, simply due to Wolverine and the slew of cameos and characters who take the attention off of the unbearably annoying Ryan Reynolds, but Deadpool 2 does have cable and Domino.
Hugh Jackman and a certain cameo easily carry the film, but there’s not nearly enough of Dogpool and you can sadly feel the MCU’s restrictions throughout. The plot and cgi are terrible.
The soundtrack slaps and the gore is great, but the chemistry between Deadpool and Wolverine is hit or miss. Wolverine is better as an asshole…
“Have you ever been tested for ADHD?”
Wolverine’s yellow suit looks fucking phenomenal to the point where I can’t believe they didn’t have him wear it from the first film, but I’ve always known that his mask would look like shit on screen and it looks laughably fucking terrible.
The white eyes work for Deadpool, but Hugh is a genuinely great actor who shows emotion and there’s a reason why they kept him out of the mask for all of those years. He looks blind!
I will also say that Deadpool and Wolverine is a justified tribute to the Fox movies and their universe, but I also don’t care for the TVA and the MCU going forward unless it’s always like this.
I did love the Mad Max feel of the Void however and I did not expect the credits to include a tribute of behind the scenes pictures and videos from all of the Fox films, to Green Day’s “Good Riddance.” I literally cried like a baby…
James McAvoy and Hugh Jackman. Legends.
Overall, I enjoyed Deadpool and Wolverine, but it’s not that special and on par with the first two.
The plot is all over the place and quite a letdown. There’s just too much “meh” and the film is a little too aware of its own stupidity.
If this can’t save the superhero genre, then I truly don’t know what can…
Shoutout to the CN Tower being in the void!
Here are my spoiler filled opinions…
First off… no Taylor Swift!? Lame, fuck that.
I also wasn’t sure about the opening at Logan’s grave, but once “Bye Bye Bye” kicks in and Deadpool tears apart Logan’s corpse to kill the agents, I started getting down.
The Goo Goo Dolls “Iris” playing over Deadpool and a shirtless Wolverine revealing themselves at the end rules, as I truly thought one or the both of them were going to sacrifice themselves to “save the MCU” going forward…
Iris is easily one of the best songs of all time.
I loved Deadpool’s search for Wolverine and died laughing at the comic accurate short Wolverine.
My jaw dropped at the Henry Cavill variant, but I would’ve rather had seen Daniel Radcliffe play “Patch” or Karl Urban as another Wolverine.
The nods to the comics are great and I loved seeing Wolverine in his original suit, but we barely see the Hulk and I was hoping for at least a thirty second fight. Oh well…
The “NicePool” variant is terrible and should’ve been an absolute asshole who makes fun of main Deadpool for having cancer, but this is Disney and maybe I’m just fucked up…
I expected to love the scene with all of the Deadpool variants, but it’s literally pointless and ended up boring me to death.
Ladypool looks hot, I did chuckle at Matthew McConaughey voicing Cowboy Deadpool and I love how Paul Mullin is Welshpool.
Unfortunately, Deadpool and Wolverine reaches MCU levels of crap by the end and I honestly don’t really care what happens from here…
Wolverine ended with Logan.
I enjoyed Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, but they don’t get enough screen time and I hate how Cassandra goes back on her decision to help Logan and Wade at the end.
I liked all of the cameos throughout her soldiers, but the Juggernaut is terrible and Azazel literally does nothing. They’re all pretty pointless.
The “Resistance” team is the best part…
The underrated Channing Tatum easily steals the film by finally playing Remy LeBeau, AKA Gambit and his forced accent is perfectly hilarious.
Laura and Elektra are fun, but there’s sadly not enough of them and my jaw literally dropped at the reveal/return of Wesley Snipes as Blade.
It was obviously the money, but I still have no idea how Ryan Reynolds convinced that asshole to swallow his pride and come back.
Wesley does make it count though and Chris Evans also owns every scene reprising the Human Torch, but the best is how they trick us with the Captain America theme.
Imagine if Nic Cage’s Ghostrider showed up as the “Mad Max” of this wasteland!?
I really want Cassandra Nova to scratch my brain like that.
