The Substance

The Substance

Cronenberg is probably the obvious comp people are making, but The Substance honestly reminded me of Re-Animator and Gordon/Yuzna body-horror joints from the '80s. So, obviously, I loved it. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are both fantastic, but this really feels like a writer/director showcase for Coralie Fargeat, who crafts so many breathtaking shots and sequences. (That Hollywood Walk of Fame star sequence at the beginning, by itself, would make for a great short film! I gasped when we ended up back at that spot.) The film is pretty blunt about the points it's making, but I'm a-okay with that. The gore: spectacular.
