Shaun’s review published on Letterboxd:
An abstract ghost story that works entirely on atmosphere... and what an atmosphere it creates. An absolute creepfest that uses the power of suggestion to really weird you out.
Unlike many films that feature the birth or rise of the Internet Kurosawas film doesn't feel that outdated, sure, there are always going to be things that seem out of place because of just how much technology has advanced over the last couple of decades. Fortunately the purpose of the tech is for a societal commentary and It's testament to how well this film works that the tech is not an issue.
If there is one problem is that it's too long - it's rare that a horror film can keep up its intensity past the 100 minute mark and it's no different here. However, it goes for something genuinely humane in the last act, whether it works depends on how far you're willing to invest.
Pulse is a hair raising creepfest that takes no time at all to get under your skin and stay there. At times eerily slow, calculating and boasts some of the scariest imagery in J-Horror I've ever seen.
