Poor Things

Poor Things

Film Fest Gent 2023 - #15

Surprisingly, this was the first Lanthimos movie I had ever seen. I knew absolutely nothing about any of the plots in his movies and still don’t know anything about those that I haven’t seen. Still, I was very excited to watch Poor Things because of Lanthimos’ reputation, the stacked cast and the very few images that I had seen despite avoiding the trailer etc.

This is unlike anything else I’ve ever seen. There are similarities ofcourse, but that only makes sense when your movie has so many things going for it. Luckily, Lanthimos assembled the best elements, put them together, added his endless creativity and personality to make one super impressive masterpiece. There are many different reasons why we love film and somehow Poor Things manages to combine so damn many of those that this had almost no chance of failing.

It's absolutely brilliant and I hope everyone gets to see this. The constant reactions of the crowd, which was mostly laughter, just prove that we were all invested. Audiences should and will love it. It might just be my new favorite of 2023, but what I do know for sure is that I'll be rooting for it during every award ceremony. Many rewatches to come.

What Barbie wishes it was, could have been and should have been.
