Sparrow

Sparrow

The more familiar I become with Johnnie To's filmography, the more I come to the realization that his triad thrillers aren't even the most interesting thing he has done. Case in point Sparrow: a movie I would consider something of a heist musical, or maybe a modern-day fairytale?

I don't know, this is kind of a difficult one to classify. It's not like characters here break into song or start dancing or anything, but there is a heavy focus on choreographed movement and visual flair, and the score plays an integral part in the progression of the story.

It is really lovely actually and I think it should be seen as a joyful celebration of cinema and perhaps of life in general.

Quite spectacular.

PS. It's nice seeing Simon Yam in a role where he isn't a nasty creep for a change.
