The Spy Who Loved Me

The Spy Who Loved Me

"Bond, what do you think you're doing!"
"Keeping the british end up, sir."

This film comes to us from Lewis Gilbert, director of Alfie (1966), Sink The Bismarck (1960), and he directed the 5th and 11th Bond films You Only Live Twice (1967) and Moonraker (1979) respectively. The film was made for $13.5 million.:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::So, what did I think of The Spy Who Loved Me? This is one of the best Bond films of all time. Roger Moore has finally found his footing as James Bond, and plays the part very well in this film. This film shows why he is my favorite, mostly because he can pull off both the serious parts and the humor. Barbara Bach is kinda wooden as Anya Amasova or Agent XXX. While she has her moments where she is good, I kinda found it hard to get into her character fully. I feel like the next film does this type of character quite a bit better. Curt Jürgens was ok as villain Karl Stromberg. It's not that he is bad, it's just that he really is nothing special. Richard Kiel is good as Jaws, the henchman of Stromberg who has metal teeth. I thought Kiel did a great job at being both menacing and funny at the right times. The original musical score from Marvin Hamlisch is some of the best in the series for my money. I love both the 70s disco sound and the orchestral bliss on display. I know people may not agree with me, but I think it's better than most of what John Barry has composed for the series. The action in the film is pretty good, and You Only Live Twice, this director proved that he knew how to do the action. There are plenty if scenes of well done action, with the obvious best being the ending raid of stromberg's stolen vessel. This film is one of the best in the Bond series. I dont think many could disagree with me, but this is a pretty fantastic film by itself. It delivers all you could want in not just a Bond film, but in a spy thriller as well. Exotic locales, intrigue, good music, good action, beautiful women and megalomaniacal villains. The film is just amazing, and I think my score is deserved. I give the film a 5/5 stars.
