Lobby Boy’s review published on Letterboxd:
Why don't sigmas want to be Gwynplaine? He is the real Joker.
Gwynplaine was a child who had his face disfigured at the King's command. Always living with a smile on his face, Gwynplaine lives by being a clown and is in love with Déa, a girl he saved when he was little. The film shows the problems he faces because of this condition.
Beautiful film, It's actually very beautiful and touching. I feel the pain that Gwynplaine lives, imagine living like that, with his face disfigured and being laughed at all his life. It's the beginning of a villain, but he doesn't become one, the only trace of villainy is his smile but other than that he's a good man. Affectionate and kind, Gwynplaine is one of horror's greatest icons but I don't really see it that way, Of course, the film has scenes that give you goosebumps because of that laughter, but once you understand that it's a condition and not evil, you're not afraid, but rather pity.
The acting is phenomenal, I really think silent films have brilliant acting. You see a man laughing but you know he's sad just by his eyes, that's incredible, you know? You don't hear him say anything but you still know what he feels. And this is not just for the protagonist but for the rest of the characters too.
The photography and direction is really cool, I found it quite enigmatic, you know? I don't know how to explain it, it feels like I was watching a German Gothic film.
That's it, I highly recommend it but don't think it's horror, you'll cry like a little girl.

A king made me a clown! A queen made me a Peer! But first, God made me a man!
