Magic Mike XXL 2015
The one about expressing your true self through your art, and not letting the work grind or suffocating bosses define you, strip you of your identity. Work takes a toll on the individual. Work in these times forces you to focus on it and only it, stripping us of our individuality and given us a “role”, a labor role at that (but that’s another, more loaded, essay for another day and definitely another site).

Carol 2015
Noticed this time around how men are kept at a distance from Therese and Carol in shots, whether it be through wider shots or blocking in a scene. Like when Therese meets that writer in his office, the shot kept at a distance to reflect her lack of any closeness or connection with a man. Or when Carol is in close contact with Harge, the distance appears in her looks, her words. Harge intrudes constantly, but Carol keeps her walls…

Poppies and Sailboats 2001
Set this to Cover Me by Björk given that it’s the same length as the short film… genius idea. It adds on to this beautiful juxtaposition of land and sea, of work and leisure, or whatever you may think of it when you watch it yourself, for that is the beauty of experimental cinema!
