Nekron 3043’s review published on Letterboxd:
We're going forward in time here with my snow binge here, but I thought Alien vs Predator was due for a rewatch now.
A team of scientists, led by Weyland (Lance Henriksen) discover an ancient temple in Antarctica. Little do they suspect that they will get caught in the middle of a battle between two of the most awesome extraterrestrials of all time!
The Alien vs Predator movie is SO underrated! While the human characters of the movie aren't the most iconic, it's at least great that we get to see the Xenomorphs and Yautjas finally duke it out on the big screen after all the comics and video games we got about their rivalry. This is one of the very few movies we get to see Predators be good guys, as they team up with the scientists to fight the Aliens, so the audience can route for the Predators. Whenever a Predator dies in this movie I'm just like aw man :(
Lexi Woods (Sanaa Lathan) was a solid protagonist, I think she had potential; wish they did a couple more Alien and/or Predator related movies with her as the main character. Are there any comics she's in? The Alien head shield and tail spear were cool.
Most of the creature effects and set pieces were practical, most of it was great; looked like a lot of effort was put into it. Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr., who did the creature effects for Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, also did the creature effects here.
The moving walls in the temple were really cool. I remember playing the Alien vs Predator game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and a lot of the levels took place inside Predator temples; it was a really fun game but also too short. This is another one of those movies like Stargate where it proposes the idea of aliens coming to Earth and influencing our own culture. I always think that's an interesting idea. Loved the backstory scene, especially when those Predators are on top of the pyramid, defending the pyramid from a hoarde of Aliens, awesome!
I wonder if another Alien Predator crossover movie will ever be made? I'd like to see a movie adaptation of AVP WAR, which is about a human woman named Machiko Noguchi who joins a Predator tribe. That was a really good comic.
Not the best Alien movie or Predator movie, but AVP is pretty good and underrated.
Fun fact: this was the last Alien or Predator related movie to be officially released on VHS. At least, until the Alien Romulus limited edition VHS came out last year. I have all them (including both the Theatrical and Special Editions of Aliens) all I need is that Romulus limited edition VHS and my Alien/Predator VHS collection will be complete.
