This movie is bizarre. At the jump, you sort of have an idea of what story it's trying to tell. High schooler with big dreams of being a stunt performer sees the world in dreamlike action sequences and when her older sister gets engaged and moves out, the little sister cannot help but perceive this as a sci fi movie plot with an evil villain who she needs to rescue her sister from. And for the first half, the movie seems to get it.
But then you start to notice that the fight scenes need to have actually happened, otherwise certain plot points don't make sense. And by the end, everyone is actually fighting and the perceived villain is an actual villain and the metaphor is completely lost. Instead of a coming of age/follow your dreams movie, it becomes a full on body snatchers and it really muddles the coming of age bits. Like, if you showed this to a kid in our protagonists shoes, I have to imagine she'd come out feeling worse. Her worst fears are true.
I can't help but appreciate the wonderful style this movie bring to the table. The action scenes are fun to watch and the rest of the world is equally lively. But ultimately the very strange story makes this tough to really love.
