“You wanted to lose a guy in ten days, congratulations, you did it. You just lost him.” - Benjamin “Ben” Barry
Donald Petrie’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a romantic comedy film. The film is based on the picture book of the same name by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long. The film follows advertising executive Benjamin Barry makes a bet that he can make any woman fall in love with him, while women’s magazine writer Andie Anderson plans to write an article about how she led a man to dump her, putting them at cross-purposes after they choose each other as their quarries. The film stars Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey.
Kate Hudson’s Andie Anderson is a women’s magazine writer that plans to have Ben dump her in 10 days to write her article. Hudson gives a chaotic, iconic, mothering performance.
Matthew McConaughey’s Benjamin “Ben” Barry is an advertising executive that makes a bet to make any woman fall in love with him and begins to date Andie. McConaughey gives a charismatic, hilarious performance.
The rest of the supporting cast all gives excellent, memorable performances. The screenplay is a lot of fun and sweet and follows a lot of the rom-com tropes but does it really well. The cinematography and score is remarkable. This is definitely a great rom-com and one of the best ones I’ve watched.
