I thought this was interesting. The ending was a downer- but it felt real and earned. While at times it felt a little on the nose- the allegory for the queer experience in America was layered, artistic, and authentic. The only thing about the movie I didn't like was at times, I thought, some of the dialogue was clunky and maybe a little overwritten. Also, the music- particularly in the bar, was not for me and I found myself distracted by how much I wishing for a non-lyrical soundtrack. That's just personal taste though and not a criticism of the execution of it.
