No one makes coming-of-age movies with female protagonists quite like Andrea Arnold. I always love how realistic her depictions of girlhood are, which is why I was thrown off by a bit of magical realism in Bird that I wasn’t prepared for. But I also wasn’t prepared to see a group of people singing Coldplay’s “Yellow” to a toad, and I loved that. If anyone other than Andrea Arnold directed this, my opinion would be more negative.
