Feature film debut from writer/director Ishana Shyamalan has some creative ideas — they’re just not executed all that well. The first half hour just feels rushed and subsequently doesn’t provide the necessary atmosphere to have the twist (which I figured out way too early) really pay off the way it should. There are definitely moments throughout but they don’t add up to anything all that substantial. Interested to see what she follows this up with. Reminded me of A Quiet Place and Bad Times at the El Royale, just nowhere near as good as either. Also got LOST vibes as well, but that show had the luxury of multiple seasons to explore the nature of loss, spiritual displacement, and the struggle to keep tabs on one’s own humanity. The ingredients are there for something intriguing, but an underwhelming screenplay and uninspired direction really limit this.
