tons of personality & made with love and a message in mind and i think it comes through. feels very student filmy at times when a scene starts and there's like a noticeable second before everyone gets going but it's made up for by the super charming and convincing personalities in the movie. i was a little surprised when the plot started to go the way it does because it's such a stereotype to say there's a young black girl living in the projects who gets pregnant and her whole life is derailed but like you watch the whole thing and it feels like that's the point. it's subversive because it tells the story you expect but it tells it in full, we see chantel's anxiety about the pregnancy and teenage denial that prevents her from doing anything about it before it's too late, we see her try and fail to get assistance because her household income is too high, we see her make it through the birth and freak out because she can't have anyone know she had the baby, we see her at the end in a better place and achieving her goals anyway, we see the father stepping up and staying involved even when he's being pretty actively pushed away. it's really good to be honest. i also think it's just a good character study and a good teen movie. pretty great!!!!!!
