Basically impossible to get a read on this film without the Winnipeg lens - it captures the battle of belonging and alienation that comes with living in a city as strange as this one - perhaps more so than 'My Winnipeg'. Obviously extremely funny as a local, but I think that would translate regardless of where you come from.

I'm not familiar with Iranian cinema in any way, but Rankin seems to channel his influences in a manner that makes…

The allegory of construction that comprises The Brutalist is just as useful in analyzing it - like most folks, I was gripped by the plans, the promise of where it could headed, what it could become. There is some phenomenal and very memorable filmmaking in the undertaking of this story largely (but not entirely) contained in the first half.

Will also be taking the opportunity to brag here about seeing the premiere of this one. I sat with some nice Americans I met in line, Q+A with the cast and director afterwards, it was a great time. Could not get over how unassuming Rose Glass is after watching this.

So yeah, it's pretty vile. An absolute chokehold of a movie that sort of rag-dolls you around the entire runtime.

Incredibly rich film - the real deal. So many ways to turn it over, regard it, deconstruct it. Such clear filmmaking it would probably still hit with the sound off. Even taken just as a character study, or the story at face value, it's an amazing cumulative experience, constantly subverting your attempt to get ahead of it. Super challenging role for Moore who just crushes it, and so early in her career too! Her last speech is just one of the most sobering, heartbreaking things I've seen in a movie. Knocked me out. Props to Gianni for putting me on this one.
