It almost seems negligent to not notice the similarities between this and Jordan Peele's "Us." Underground human clones, created for the nefarious purpose of control of the surface community.
"Us" did it first, so that film edges this one out in originality, but I might pick this one as a slightly better experience overall.
Both films share in the same flaw that I simply can't ignore. The plots are too absurd. In both cases, I could not get past the thoughts that things would have been exposed earlier. In "Us," people would have definitively discovered the underground clones much earlier, and in this film, the whole controlling the black community through clones and mind control would have been caught on to far earlier. It never would have evolved into the operation it became.
"Us" started to solidify Peele's standing in the film industry, drawing some prestigious comparisons to the likes of Hitchcock. I thought that was a bit much. With "They Cloned Tyrone," grandiose acclaim didn't tarnish expectations. This movie had a little more room to breathe and just be what it is in that respect. I also appreciated that the tone of some of the main characters in this was a little more tongue in cheek. It's Scooby-Doo, detective team vibes helped this be more self-aware and celebratory of its own absurdity.
Also, Jamie Foxx deserves a shout out for his performance. I wouldn't be surprised to see a nomination roll his way for this.
