I was a huge wrestling fan when I was a kid. My very first live event I ever attended, Kerry Von Erich was in the main event as “The Texas Tornado,” squaring off against Mr. Perfect. I remember talk amongst my brothers and other wrestling fan friends, that The Texas Tornado fought with one foot. This was in an age before the internet, so it was all word of mouth, and none of us were 100% certain it was true. We also heard rumblings of the tragedies that plagued the Von Erich family. Again, in a pre-internet age, this all felt a little like folklore. For that reason, I had a slightly personal attachment to the story.
They executed well enough. Sure, there was a little bit of overacting, a little bit of flat acting, and a sappy, cliche ending (albeit a welcomed sappy cliche). I left the film feeling it was well done and strangely, with a little bit of closure on that microcosm of my childhood fandom.
