Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool & Wolverine

Alright guys, I surrender. Still not the best Deadpool but definitely much more infectious than the first time I watched it. Sure it has flaws all over the place and is quite a bit of a mess from a storytelling perspective but the film is so in lovingly tuned with its passionate adoration of its titular characters and the world they inhabit that it becomes irresistibly entertaining. Not only that but it’s strength and unfiltered sense of reckless passion greatly offset whatever issues the film may have as it doubles down on what does work here - on repeat viewing, the “cameos” offer more than just temporary satisfaction and they all add something to the wider picture whilst simultaneously not distracting from it, sure Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine didn’t need to return but Hugh always delivers and every single moment centered on him hits the nail in dune part to Hugh’s full commitment to both the character’s always lurking sense of emotional turmoil as well as unleashing his full unbridled berserker nature - something Logan didn’t even fully tap into and the action sequences are just as violently absurd and fun as you want them to be - the opening itself is destined to live in the annals of comic book cinema forever, every showdown between the two leads is gnarly good fun - aside from the shaky cam spontaneity of a showdown midway through (which even conceptually that fight is nerdgasm personified) and best of all, despite the presumption that this film would come tied down underneath the burden that is the wider MCU, Shawn Levy’s film stays surprisingly away from even daring to approach the universe itself - instead focusing more so on closing off the previous chapter of comic book movie history with its resolution to 20th Century Fox’s saga.

But also, Hugh Jackman. And I’d be lying if I said that despite the presumption that he absolutely didn’t need to return, the man somehow continues to break new ground as the character, continuously unearthing more for him to explore and you can’t deny that he sells every single ounce of drama and emotion for everything it’s worth while carrying a level of gravitas and machismo that makes the Wolverine such a uniquely compelling character. Teal Wolvie for life!
